Merlene Ottey was born in Cold Spring, Hanover, Jamaica. It is a very verdant area, surrounded by many springs and waterfalls. You can reach Cold Spring, using the Northern Costal Highway from Montego Bay or from Lucea, traverse along the Flint River, between Tryall Golf course and the Flint River Estate.

Merlene attended Rusea's High School in Lucea, Hanover, then went on to Vere Technical in Clarendon,  Jamaica.

At the end of 1999 she had more sub 11.00's for100 meters, than the next three female runners combined.  She has the only sub 22.00's for 200 meter indoors.

Her anchor leg on the 4x100 relay in the 1996 Olympics was a classic, a sparkling 9.83 that earned Jamaica a bronze medal. Merlene Ottey will always be our Jamaican star, her record speaks for itself.
